Four Year Strong in Manila 2012

Last December, I learned through facebook that one of my favorite bands is coming here... to the Philippines, a third-world country!

I couldn't believe it...! *Fangirl scream! Roll on the mud!

Four Year Strong is coming here!!!

I thought this would never ever happen since this band is not mainstream - they only have 300k+ fans in facebook. But it doesn't mean they're inferior in any means. So I quickly grabbed this opportunity, booked a flight and asked a friend's friend to score me a ticket. And I'm all set. :D This will be my first concert ever!

Puppy craze

I LOVE dogs and have longed for a puppy ever since I was a kid. I've always dreamed of having a Siberian Husky but other breeds will do. Unlucky for me, my grandma and my mother doesn't share the same sentiment. So I never had one. (only a virtual one through tamagotchi and neopets lol) Last week, a friend of mine posted a video on maltese-shitzu pups being totally adorable. My sister and I fell in love! We talked on our plans on buying them and how to ask permission.

The Amazing Power of Being Present

How can you bring calm and peace to the middle of a stress-ful, chaotic day?

The answer is simple, though not always so easy to put into practice: learn to be present.

No matter how out-of-control your day is, no matter how stressful your job or life becomes, the act of being present can become an oasis. It can change your life, and it’s incredibly simple.

If your job demands that you focus on an urgent task, you can stress out because you have a million other things to do and not enough time to do them. Or you can be present, and focus completely on that task, and now there is only that one task and you. When you’re done, you can move on to the next task.

Poor prickles

Hello friends :( I'm writing this post because I'm terribly sad for my hedgehog. Something really tragic happened last night and made her lose one of her eyes. I'll spare the gruesome details here but it was tragic for both my sister and I. It was 10:30 in the evening and the vet's clinic is closed for the night. We badly want to help her but it's obviously nothing we could do and we don't want to make it worse.

This morning, we rushed her to the vet as soon as the clinic was opened. However, the news the doctor gave was one of the worst - there's nothing he can do about the eye. :( I can't imagine how painful it must be for prickles and I feel really devastated for her. But the vet says she can't be administered anesthetics since hedgehogs are allergic to them - the risk of her dying is great. So there's no way to ease the pain for her. He just gave her some antibiotics to treat the infection and hopefully she won't get sick.

Please get better prickles. Even if you're now a one-eyed hog, I'll still love you very much. :(

Spreading the Chocolate Love

One of my ridiculous goals in life is to taste chocolates from all around the world.

Here's one from Russia. (Thanks Mom!)

Russian_choco

Dark chocolate. The texture is finer than most dark chocolates here. Better than Meiji. :)

The Name of the Wind Quotes

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

I'm not even half-way through but I could now really tell that this is will be one heck of a great read! Thanks to carebear Ken for lending this precious novel to me. I might buy one for my own after I read it. Mentally adds this to my own hall of fame on books. I love how the author injected philosophies on life on his writing, just like Bill Watterson on his comics Calvin and Hobbes. There are SO many great quotes in this book and here's a list http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/108424.Patrick_Rothfuss

I'd like to write down my favorites, and the ones that struck me most:

"It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story."

"Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts."

"My parents danced together, her head on his chest. Both had their eyes closed. They seemed so perfectly content. If you can find someone like that, someone who you can hold and close your eyes to the world with, then you're lucky. Even if it only lasts for a minute or a day. The image of them gently swaying to the music is how I picture love in my mind even after all these years."

Supposedly, you have a thoughtless six-year-old. What harm can he do?
Not much.
Suppose he's twenty and still thoughtless, how dangerous is he?
Still not much but more than before.
What if you give him a sword?

"A clever, thoughtless person is one of the most terrifying things there is."

- Abenthy, the main character Kvothe's teacher told him, when he attempted something foolish that almost took his life

Once I knew what was bothering me, the greater part of my uneasiness left.
Fear tends to come from ignorance. Once I knew what the problem was, it was just a problem, nothing to fear.

"Its like he knows he's better than you, but doesn't look down on you for it because he knows it's not your fault."

"The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind."

"It gets tiresome being spoken to as if you are a child, even if you happen to be one."

"Call a jack a jack. Call a spade a spade. But always call a whore a lady." Their lives are already hard enough as it is and it doesn't hurt to be polite.

"You have to be a bit of a liar to tell a story the right way."

Anger can keep you warm at night and wounded pride can spur a man to wonderous things.

Generosity deserves generosity in return. But mostly it felt like the right thing to do, and that reason is enough.

I've learned that the best way to stay safe is to make your enemies think you can't be hurt.

Do you just want to get by? Or do you want to make me proud.

-What Kwothe's mother said to him when he was complaining about learning meticulously over details

"Perhaps the greatest faculty our minds possess is the ability to cope with pain. Classic thinking teaches us of the four doors of the mind, which everyone moves through according to their need.

First is the door of sleep. Sleep offers us a retreat from the world and all its pain. Sleep marks passing time, giving us distance from the things that have hurt us. When a person is wounded they will often fall unconscious. Similarly, someone who hears traumatic news will often swoon or faint. This is the mind's way of protecting itself from pain by stepping through the first door.

Second is the door of forgetting. Some wounds are too deep to heal, or too deep to heal quickly. In addition, many memories are simply painful, and there is no healing to be done. The saying 'time heals all wounds' is false. Time heals most wounds. The rest are hidden behind this door.

Third is the door of madness. There are times when the mind is dealt such a blow it hides itself in insanity. While this may not seem beneficial, it is. There are times when reality is nothing but pain, and to escape that pain the mind must leave reality behind.

Last is the door of death. The final resort. Nothing can hurt us after we are dead, or so we have been told."

"There are two sure ways to lose a friend, one is to borrow, the other is to lend"

Ten More Minutes

It's a gloomy weekday morning, the sound of your alarm clock breaks the comfortable silence. The temperature's just right and your bed's the coziest thing in the world as of the moment. You do not want to wake up so you hit the snooze botton and said to yourself... 10 minutes more. How often does this happen to you? If you did this almost every time, then you're in a little trouble.
I always fall into the pits of this trap. I say 10 more minutes to waking up, before going to sleep, taking a bath, eating meals, visiting the dentist, work, before and after reading a book, leaving the house, going home and maybe all other instances that takes me out of my comfort zone. At first, i was doing 10 more minutes for trivial stuff such as waking up, dentist appointments but soon it got to those serious stuff as well. What's dangerous about these is that 10 minutes becomes 15, 20, 30 then a hour... The next thing you know, you're late for your appointment, missed the bus, or caught up with a deadline.
We should tell ourselves that these actions can result to consequences. If you sleep an hour later, it means your sleeping time will be reduced. You will definitely be sleepy the next day after and have a hard time waking up. (we often say to ourselves... I'll manage to wake up on time, I promise -- yeah right. We all know how this turns out) If you delay writing a report due tomorrow, you are lessening the time you allot yourself to work on it. And the more you will put pressure on yourself. So if you postpone the task you're supposed to do, make sure you'll fully accept the consequences. If you're not, then what are you still doing? Get your butt moving now. ;)
